This longstanding vegan business in Brighton has experienced a somewhat tumultuous history, but it is back trading at full steam and the food is delicious.

Happy Maki is a rolled and bowled sushi specialist in Brighton with a swathe of dedicated customers. Their 100% vegan menu is filled with maki rolls, sushi bowls, inari pockets, and tantalising sides.
It really is some of the freshest and tastiest food you will get anywhere in the UK.
Of course a lot of you will remember the drama associated with the business when the ex-owner offended lots of people with hurtful statements about Trans people. Many of us in the Queer community, and our allies, vowed to not eat with Happy Maki again because of this.
Flash forward to 2026 and I recently popped into the restaurant in support of the new ownership. The team behind Purezza has taken over Happy Maki and is working hard to restore the relationship with the community. This is no small feat but if anyone can do it, it is the Purezza team.
They have been huge supporters of the Queer communities in Brighton, London, and Manchester for years, with the Camden branch of their pizza restaurant even being home to my Queer Open Mic for a few years.
But back to Happy Maki. Take a look at this goodness.
I’m pleased to see such a vibrant vegan food business be rescued from problematic ownership and I’m sure the people of Brighton are delighted that Happy Maki lives on to continue serving delicious food in their city.
