If you are visiting Genoa and get an overwhelming desire to eat fried food, you might want to pay a visit to Friggitoria San Giorgio.
This fish and chip takeaway spot surprised me with vegan options advertised prominently on its front counter.
Read more below.

This fast food spot on Genoa’s Piazza Caricamento just steps from the city’s port looks decidedly un-vegan at first glance. It has menus and photo boards screaming about fish specialties.
But they also had a plant-based surprise.

There are two different cones of vegan food being advertised by Friggitoria San Giorgio.
One cone features chip-like snacks called panissa, made from chickpea flour and apparently a very popular street food in Genoa.
The other vegan cone includes more panissa, but this time with cuculli. Cuculli are ball-shaped fritters made from chickpea and wheat flour. These are also a Ligurian food-on-the-go specialty.
Genoa is definitely not drowning in vegan eateries but there are some surprises like this to be discovered.
