Tucked away in the small Welsh town of Cwmavon, not far from Port Talbot in the preserved county of West Glamorgan, is a local pub called The Brit.
This pub is doing a lot when it comes to vegan food. This is not your usual one sad option on a menu of meat-heavy dishes. This is a flavour-packed, well-thought-out vegan experience and I want to shout about it.
Read more below.

Let’s start with the big news.
The pub has completely levelled up its plant-based Sunday roast. We’re talking a choice between a delicious vegan meat alternative and a hearty nut roast. I know we’ve all suffered through dry nut roasts in our time, but this one sounds to be the real deal. Add to that perfectly crisped roast potatoes, a mountain of vegetables, rich vegan gravy and, wait for it, vegan Yorkshire puddings that they’ve apparently spent ages perfecting.
If you fancy really going for it, they’re also serving up a vegan cauliflower cheese as a side. You can dine in at 12PM, 2PM or 4PM every Sunday or grab it to go if you’re more of a pyjamas-on-the-sofa kind of eater. Either way, you win. Be sure to book your table ahead of time!
But here’s the thing that truly makes my heart swell. The rest of the menu? Also stacked with vegan options. So if you can’t make it on a Sunday, don’t panic. You’re still spoiled for choice.
Let me tease you with a few dishes:
- Plant-based fishcake on a bed of rocket with garlic mayo and tomato salsa
- Plant-based meatballs in a rich Napoli sauce served on toasted homemade focaccia
- Pan-fried mushroom scallops with truffled pea purée and plant-based bacon
- Beer battered onion rings
- Plant-based salmon fillet in a coriander and lime creamy, curried sauce served with coconut rice
And this isn’t even the full list.
Seeing a small-town pub putting this kind of energy into vegan offerings is exciting. It’s a sign that good vegan food is no longer niche. It belongs everywhere. In cities, in tiny towns, in the local you’ve been going to since you were 18 (or younger if you were an early bloomer like me!).
If you find yourself anywhere near Cwmavon, do yourself a massive favour and get in there for a roast.
