I had the immense pleasure of visiting Purezza in Brighton yesterday as an invited guest and while it’s no surprise they’re serving up phenomenal vegan food, I was particularly overjoyed by one special item on their menu.
Reader, they’ve gone and done something wonderful. They’ve put tempeh on a pizza.
Read more below.

Yes. You read that correctly. Tempeh. On a pizza. And not just any old pizza, either. I’m talking about the new Gochujang Pizza featuring teriyaki tempeh, gochujang sauce, pak choi, and mushrooms.
Incredible.
Not only was this pizza mouthwateringly delicious, but I was thrilled to see tempeh being championed in such a prominent and flavourful way. It’s about time this brilliant ingredient got the attention it deserves in the UK. Tempeh has been kicking around for hundreds of years, but far too often it’s left sitting in the shadow of its more famous cousin tofu. And while I’ll never say no to tofu, there’s something about tempeh that just hits differently.
For the uninitiated, tempeh is made from fermented soybeans. It’s packed with protein and has a firm, meaty texture that holds up beautifully in dishes where tofu might go a bit floppy. And let’s not forget its wonderful nutty taste that takes on flavours and marinades perfectly.
I’ve been known to sing tempeh’s praises from time to time, but it still feels like an under-appreciated treasure in most UK restaurant kitchens. So seeing Purezza not only embrace it, but elevate it to pizza topping status, gave me a real buzz. It’s a bold move and it completely pays off.
So if you find yourself in Brighton (or London or Manchester) and in the mood for something different, delicious and decidedly tempeh-forward, get yourself over to Purezza and try that Gochujang Pizza. It might just change the way you think about tempeh.
