One of the most memorable days of my life was my wedding day in Sheffield back in 2021.
If you can remember those confusing times, it was during one of the lockdowns or partial lockdowns. Such a shit time. Despite the uncertainty and the strange atmosphere of the world, it was a truly magical day filled with love, joy and, of course, cake.
Not just any cake. A vegan wedding cake.

Growing up in Queensland, Australia, there was a time when I did not think a moment like this would ever be possible for me. Same sex relationships were not legally recognised and it was actually illegal to be gay!
The idea of a gay wedding cake would have felt as far-fetched as flying to the moon. Queensland only decriminalised homosexuality in 1991. Even then, progress was slow and cautious. It was not until 2013 that same-sex marriage became legal here in the UK, and I will never forget the feeling of possibility that change brought.
Fast forward to a sunny day in Sheffield in 2021 and I was surrounded by friends, celebrating my love for my husband, and standing in front of the most beautiful vegan cake you could ever imagine.
Finding an independent vegan baker who was not only willing but thrilled to celebrate our same-sex wedding meant the world to me. There is a special kind of validation in having your joy shared and honoured by others. Steph of Steph’s Cakes created a masterpiece for us, and I will be forever grateful.
Steph’s Cakes is a true gem. Based in Sheffield, Steph specialises in stunning custom vegan cakes that taste as good as they look. Although the fancy, intricate creations are best suited for people lucky enough to be in the Sheffield area, Steph has expanded to include a home bakes side of the business that ships mouth-watering vegan treats across the UK.
If you are looking for delicious, lovingly made vegan bakes, I cannot recommend Steph’s Cakes highly enough. Whether you are celebrating a wedding, a birthday, or simply getting through another week, Steph has got you covered.
Sometimes, when I reflect on that day, I get a bit emotional. Because it was not just about the cake, though the cake was spectacular. It was about visibility, about community, and about all the tiny victories that led to that moment. Victories fought for by so many people before me.
Having a vegan wedding cake at my gay wedding might seem like a small thing, but for me it was a symbol of how far we have come and a sweet reminder that we deserve every celebration.
If you fancy a bit of that joy for yourself, check out Steph’s Cakes. Treat yourself. Celebrate yourself. Every bite is a little slice of progress.
