I am not a child nor am I raising any, but I still found myself absolutely charmed by this colourful and clever cookbook.
Kids’ Kitchen Takeover by Oliver McCabe is a celebration of plant-based cooking made fun, simple, and accessible for children aged 5 to 15. It’s packed with over 35 recipes that are clear, vibrant, and easy to follow.
What I adore about this book is its empowering message.
This isn’t about pretending kids are cooking while adults do all the hard work. This book invites young people to take the reins. From breakfast through to dinner and snacks in between, it offers the tools and guidance for kids to feel in control of their own nourishment. I mean, what could be more fabulous than seeing a child knock together a hearty stew or blend up a colourful smoothie using nutritious ingredients?

There is also a bigger picture at play here.
Teaching kids to cook from a young age using fruits, vegetables, beans and grains lays the foundation for a healthier relationship with food. It sets them up for a lifetime of better choices and a deeper understanding of how what we eat connects to our wellbeing, the wellbeing of our community, and the overall wellbeing of the planet.
So whether you’re a parent, carer, auntie, uncle, older sibling, teacher or just a friend of someone raising a plant-based superstar, Kids’ Kitchen Takeover deserves a spot on your bookshelf. It’s practical and full of nourishing recipes that the whole family will actually want to eat.
Plus, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be tempted to make the recipes yourself even if there are no kids in sight.
