Vegan food with the NHS
I’ve been hearing rumblings and rumours over the past few weeks of people having positive vegan food experiences with the National Health Service (NHS).
Of course your vegan experience depends on where you access the NHS, as different trusts are in charge of different parts of the country and they are responsible for individual menus.
My buddy Quarrygirl (follow on Twitter and Instagram for vegan glory) has given me this photo to share with you all from her latest NHS situation in London.
Just look at all of this clearly marked vegan eating!
Even just a few years ago (months?!) this sort of plant-based food choice would have been the stuff of dreams.
I’m thrilled to see veganism being taken seriously by the UK’s health services and hospitals. Now we need to get them to serve ONLY vegan food.
If you have a recent positive experience of NHS menus, please share in the comments below. I would love to see how this new way of thinking is spreading around the country.
When I was in the hospital in 2015 having my son there were complete vegan meals in sealed plastic trays – they were vegetarian Indian food meals, as this was in Bradford (BRI) they just all happened to be vegan too. Each one would have a dal, a curry eg sag aloo, and rice. They weren’t just tolerable, they were pretty damn tasty! They weren’t trying to cater for vegans, it was an accident, but I was lucky, as I was in there for an (awful) week, and I don’t know how I would have eaten otherwise..
Same, I think the last time I was in hospital was about 10 years ago, and I looked forward to my vegan Asian Veg option every mealtime. Luckily, I love curry, so it suited me fine. But looks like this is a proper stab at vegan hospital food.
I was in hospital for a day a couple of months ago and literally ended up having to have cereal for lunch 🙁
I am in hospital right this moment – that’s how I’ve found this article.
For me the options are nothing like this at all – it’s all computerised and the information provided is completely inadequate hence why I’ve turned to google.
Nowhere on line listing the nhs food ingredients – my only option for breakfast is looking like toast and jam and fresh fruit. Rubbish so far – hoping they roll this amazing menu out into Hampshire too!! Because all nhs hospitals definately aren’t a far forwards as this x
When I was in hospital in 2013 I was offered beef, and when I pointed out I didn’t eat meat was told that that was what I’d ordered (twenty years after I last chose to eat meat).
