Be a tosser
Josh is our guest writer today and he is bringing us some news that might very well change the way you eat in Central London.
Take it away, Josh.
A work engagement recently took me near the Tossed location in Clerkenwell. If you haven’t heard of Tossed before, it’s essentially a salad bar, but not just any old salad. At Tossed, you get to choose exactly what goes into your salad and then watch as your server tosses it before placing it in a bowl for you. Simplicity at its best.
The great thing for vegans is that Tossed mark all their vegan ingredients clearly and a clean bowl is used to toss every order meaning any risk of cross-contamination is minimal. Check out my salad below. It was a super-grains/spinach base with falafel, beansprouts, roasted peppers, carrots and avocado topped with a balsamic vinaigrette. Seriously one of the best salads I’ve ever had. The slightly warm super-grains (brown, wild & red rice, red quinoa & green lentils) had a delicious nutty flavour which contrasted so well with the creamy avocado. The dense flavour of the falafel was nicely offset by the fresh spinach, beansprouts and carrots while the balsamic vinaigrette drew everything together to create one hell of a taste combination. I’ll definitely be ordering this combination again.
As if delicious salads weren’t enough, Tossed also do ready-to-go offerings such as the Buddha Bowl (pictured) and an amazing-sounding Thai green curried kale soup (not pictured). The icing on the cake for me were the ready-made tubs of vegan custard and banana!
Thank you Tossed for making delicious salads and for considering vegans in your menu. At present, the only protein option for vegans is the falafel. It would be great to see some vegan meats in there in the future!
I do like Tossed but have had a few bad experiences, once given sauce (and eaten some) that actually had fish in and the staff seemed to find it funny, and couple of times meat added to salad so always check what’s in the bowl when they start tossing it!
That’s great! But, I went into the Westfield branch last weekend and tried to order a falafel; there were 3 non vegan items in it which I asked to be taken out, and I asked if they could replace them with hummus and they said they’d have to charge me for it? So, I just walked off!
I do love their mugs though that say, ‘I am a tosser’! 😀
and a lot of plastic….. 🙁
On their website the falafel is NOT listed as suitable for vegans. I’ve emailed them to check
Yes it is Brian – go to this page:

If you view the Central London main menu you will see it over on the right in the ‘Create your own’ column.
Clearly their menu is wrong. In one place it states falafel is vegan and elsewhere else it states it’s just vegetarian! I’m still waiting to hear back from them.
I went into the Tossed in Bishosgate remembering I read something about it being vegan somewhere – here I guess – and I asked if they had any vegan food (because it was late in the day and the salad bar was closed) and the girl who worked there looked at me as if I landed from mars – and repeated vegetarian twice. Not a knowledgeable venue at all.
