I’ve said it before…

and I’ll say it again…

Babycakes NYC equals M-E-H.

Everytime I go to New York City, I enter BabyCakes vegan bakery with the hope I will be impressed (or at least pleased). I never am.

My number one gripe would have to be the service. Surly is not a quality I look for in my bakery servers. Call me crazy, but it doesn’t fill me with warmth. The food is OK, bordering on unusually-odd/bland. For a vegan food provider known all around the world, I simply don’t rate them as world class. With superstar donut producer Dun-Well a short ride away on the L train, it is beyond time for BabyCakes to up the ante.

My visit a few months ago resulted in a severe case of déjà vu. My donut was pretty, yet ineffectual. The server made me feel like I was taking to long to choose. I left the premises remembering what I had easily forgotten… the reasons why I never want to go back.

As always, if you disagree with me I would love to know. Maybe I’ve been ordering the wrong item. Do you think BabyCakes is worth a visit when visiting Manhattan?

  1. I was not totally impressed either. I made a special trip when I was in Manhattan visiting and did not feel very welcome in the shop. If you are going to be rude to me at least make the donuts great! I really want to go back and eat at Dunwell’s, their stuff looks amazing.

  2. i haven’t been to the babycakes bakery (yet), but i do love their cookbooks. an important thing to note about babycakes is that their goodies are not only vegan, but gluten-free as well. so it might not be fair to compare their baked goods with those that contain gluten.

  3. For vegan cupcakes? Cocoa V in NYC Know why? They use real sugar, real flour and real fat. I mean, come on, if I’m having a cupcake, I want a decadent, sweet, heavenly cupcake. They serve wine, too. 😉

  4. I keep trying them every time I’m in the area but have to say I’m pretty unimpressed. I’d only ever get brownies or cookies from there now. I did have a lovely plum biscuit once (a UK scone with plum jam) but didn’t see them there since.

btw Ellen I’ve had heavenly g/f vegan cupcakes in the UK (for example Cat and the Cream).
