I traveled 11 hours by plane to the other side of the world and what did I discover? If you guessed delicious vegan cupcakes, give yourself a pat on the back!

Mexico City is not known internationally as a haven for vegans. Walking through any street market in the metropolis would lead you to believe the concept of plant-based fare is completely unknown. All sorts of dead animals are fried, boiled and seared before your very eyes and it is confronting and often gruesome.

But not all is lost. A new wave of vegan options is taking over Distrito Federal and I am extremely proud to say a dear friend of mine is part of the movement by making sure he offers cruelty-free treats as part of his new baking endeavour.

I first met my friend Julio during a trip to Mexico City in 2008. Ever since I have known him, he has been actively pursuing  his dream to start his own bakery business. Flash forward to 2012 and Julio is finally putting his dreams into action and he has made sure his FGV buddy is not left out of the excitement.

Alcantara Bakery of Mexico City

Alcantara Bakery is a made to order cake business in the center of one of the biggest cities on the planet. Julio is a skilled baker and decorator, creating beautiful desserts and treats for customers across the capital.

I was more than delighted to discover Alcantara Bakery can not only produce vegan cakes and cupcakes on demand, they do it extremely well. I popped into Julio’s kitchen (in the gorgeous suburb of Condesa) a few days ago to cast my critical vegan eye over proceedings and was blown away by his attention to vegan detail. Even the food colouring was cruelty-free!

If you are heading to Mexico City anytime in the future, get in contact with Julio to place an order for his vegan cupcakes. If you know a business in the city that would benefit from stocking his vegan treats, point them in his direction. I’m looking at you, Falafelito.

Alcantara Bakery is not a vegan business, but Julio’s  cruelty-free creations are world-class. His vegan cupcakes are just another way Mexico City is slowly but surely becoming more animal-friendly.
