Vegan food in Miami

A couple of weeks ago I landed at Miami airport and had a long drive across the Everglades before heading north to Gulfport ahead of me. This didn’t leave me very much time for lunch, so I quickly checked the HappyCow app to find the nearest place and luckily found something en route in the western suburbs of Miami.

Vegan and Juice is a Cuban/Latin-style establishment in an unassuming strip mall just a 10-minute drive from the airport.

I walked inside and was greeted by a friendly server who explained that they have different size takeaway containers which give you a certain number of choices depending on the size of the container. I had read somewhere (either in the HappyCow comments or on Facebook) that not everything they serve is vegan, that they sometimes use dairy cheese. I asked the server about that and she confirmed that was the case but the day I visited everything was 100% vegan. Yay!

I made my selections and headed back out to the car and had a quick nibble before setting out on my journey. I made several pitstops throughout the Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve to keep eating. The food was delicious and what a scenic setting to enjoy it! In my container I had cilantro (coriander) rice, tofu ceviche, a baked plantain and some sort of delicious vegan ham and yuca bake (yuca is synonymous with cassava and shouldn’t be mistaken for the popular yucca houseplant)!

At one of the stops on my drive across the Everglades, an alligator had its beady eyes on my food but it wasn’t going to get any!

I loved the food but I’m a bit perplexed as to why a place with ‘vegan’ in the name still serves dairy cheese, especially when the vegan alternatives are so good these days. Nevertheless, it was highly enjoyable and I can’t wait to go back.

Be sure to follow Vegan and Juice on Twitter and like them on Facebook.
