Vegan all the way

Now, here’s one for the history books.

Mark this as probably the first time you have read about vegan Chianti wine that is produced, bottled and packaged with the strict exclusion of animal products.

Yep, even the glue on the label and the tape on the cartons has been sourced for their vegan status.

Damn! This is some righteous vino.

Fattoria Casabianca is an organic wine producing company in Siena, Tuscany. This region is the home to the world-famous Chianti wine and the Fattoria Casabianca estate is bordered by two rivers, making it the perfect location for controlling what goes into their bottles. The estate is defiantly organic and has now taken the unique step to ensure their Chianti output is 100% vegan as well.

Check out this fascinating insight into the company’s dedication to producing vegan wine:

The decision to start producing a Chianti vegan wine was almost a natural consequence for Fattoria Casabianca: “Our aim is to farm in an organic way, to be eco-friendly and to become a closed loop farm. Being vegan is a natural way to achieve these goals, but obtaining the certification was not easy, and we had to change many aspects of our winemaking.

In order to maintain the vegan certification we can’t use any animal products during the entire process, from the grape to the bottle.” says Giacomo Sensi, a vegetarian winemaker of Fattoria Casabianca. We have replaced all the products and derivatives of animal origin that we used to use in the vineyards, the cellars and the packaging, including bottling materials: the glue and the ink of the labels, the tape used to seal the boxes, the corks, etc.

The vegan certification from the 2014 harvest covers the entire line of our wines from Fattoria Casabianca, which includes a Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, two Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva DOCG, IGT, as well as two whites, a rosè and two reds, which add up to about 400 thousand bottles per year, all strictly cruelty free. The new certification will not affect the price of the wine: “Our goal has always been to bottle excellent wines, respectful of the terroir and at an affordable price”, declares Alberto Cenni.

I don’t know about you, but I’m suddenly feeling incredibly thirsty.

Sadly, we can’t buy these wines in the UK just yet but I’m hopeful a distributor will pick them up soon. I’m looking at you VinceremosVintage Roots and Sustainable Wines UK.

Follow Fattoria Casabianca on Twitter and like them on Facebook.
