Unbelievable news

MAJOR UPDATE

People have been emailing me like crazy today saying they have been told by Tesco that this product has milk proteins as an ingredient even though it doesn’t say so on the label.

I have been on the phone with Tesco for a long time just now only to be assured by the customer service person there is NO milk protein as an added ingredient.

Of course I explained the mixed messages we are getting and my service person has told me they will look into it in fine detail and get back to me ASAP, but that might not be until Monday. In the meantime I suggest anyone who doesn’t want to eat a product that purposively contains dairy milk stays away from this item.

I’ll report back as soon as I can.

I don’t know what to say. I am overwhelmed by this vegan news out of London. Hold on to your jaunty hats, kids.

Last night I received a text message from Angela of The Third Estate with a very special grainy photo attached.

There are no words.

fetch>UID>-1Yes. It is a jar of Bourbon biscuits blended into a paste. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a product that speaks s0 profoundly to who I am as a person.

I’ve also included the back view of the jar to alert allergy survivors that the product may contain traces of allergens. In addition, palm oil avoiders will want to give it a miss.

Is this the most amazing news ever? Have you tasted it? Is it as fab as it looks?

  1. That is super dooper news for chocolate lovers, but I’ve been in love with the Lotus biscuit spread for a while now! 😛

  2. just as i leave the UK i see this. dammit.
will have to try it when i next visit!

  3. I think products, besides being Vegan, also need to be of high standard in order to recommend them to the community or/and friends and family. This one has rapeseed (canola) oil as a main ingredient, it is an industrial oil that goes rancid very quickly and is very refined and deodorised. If it is heated it becomes even more toxic and causes lung cancer if constantly inhaled. I don’t buy any products with rapeseed oil, because it indicates that the companies cheap out and choose profits over consumers’ health, which is always a good indicator of companies’ standards.
If you check Tesco’s hummus labels, they all contain rapeseed oil, but not the organic plain kind (sunflower). There’s a reason for that and people need to be aware.

Palm oil on the label is not marked as sustainable, so it contributes towards “deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced” http://www.saynotopalmoil.com/Whats_the_issue.php

So regardless of the fact that this product is accidently vegan, it is unethical and for this reason I would never buy it anyway (i.e. give money to Tesco in support of this recipe).

    Thanks for reading!

    • I’m not sure what your claim about rapeseed oil causing cancer when inhaled is supposed to prove? Inhaling chocolate spread would be very unpleasant! It would be helpful to cite sources for claims about foodstuffs supposedly causing diseases, as I’ve never seen this particular accusation before. What I have seen is rapeseed oil recommended as an inexpensive way to maintain a good balance of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.

  4. This product isn’t vegan… it says that it may contain eggs….

  5. Tesco say that this is not vegan as it *does* (not “may”) contains milk proteins (apparently, in the biscuits).

Of course, there’s a chance that they’re just confused about cross-contamination. But it’s best avoided until they confirm its suitability for vegans.

    • Actually different people from Tesco are now saying different things! Still, probably best to give it a miss until they clear up the confusion…

  6. If you want to make it yourself, try this:

    Bourbon Biscuit Spread

    15 vegan bourbon biscuits
    1 tsp brown sugar
    1 tbsp cocoa powder
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    ¼ cup non-dairy milk
    2 tbsp oil
    Pinch salt

Grind the biscuits in the food processor until they are crumbs. Add sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, milk, oil and salt and process for 2 minutes.

  7. Or stick with a totally Vegan Company e.g. Plamil!! 🙂 Sure, I’ve had plenty spreads/choc’ bars, etc with May Contain on them — sometimes the label has the Vegan logo & I’m happy OR it’s companies covering their backs, just in case there was ‘cross contamination’ re-allergies…..I do have a friend who said he doesn’t eat anything that says ‘may contain’ as that begs the question how exactly was this product made that a company can’t be sure whether there’s dairy, etc, in it or not! ….oh, the many levels of hardcore Veganism! I may get more hardcore!! E.g. I only got my head round all the Vegan alcohol options in the last few years –I’ve certainly lodged a ”mini barnivore” in my brain, so I know pretty much what’s Vegan in a pub *Stella/Aspalls/Stowford,etc!!* Anyway…….one day we wont have to phone Tesco or Sainsburys or Waitrose when the world goes Vegan…. but until the ‘revolution’ … all the best trying to get a clear answer! 😛 xx
