News you can eat October 2013

Here it is, people. All the vegan news that is fit to eat from the month of October… and there is a lot to get through.

Tuck in!

Berry Delight

Berry Delight

I was pleasantly surprised by these tasty bites by nakd. I can see myself picking these up for a road trip or maybe even next time I fly. Handy and quite lovely.

Vegan shoes

Vegan shoes

I was blown away by the vegan selection on show in the Dr. Martens boutique in Covent Garden. Gorgeous colours and fab styles. They even had a sign explaining why and how they have them. Check it out!

Falafel

Falafel

Isn’t it lovely when you are walking along a London street and the word vegan smacks you in the face? This falafel outlet is situated on Earlham Street in Covent Garden and they make huge wraps for £4.50 or you can opt for a smaller one for less money. Everything they serve is vegan and extremely tasty. The stall is open from Monday until Friday every week.

Snacks

Snacks

These multigrain crisp thins by The Food Doctor were OK. I wouldn’t run down the street to sing their praises but I enjoyed them smothered in salsa verde. Maybe they will be more suited to your tastes?

Vegan Chocolate

Vegan Chocolate

Fran Costigan is a pioneer of the vegan scene. Fran has been telling people how to cook and eat gorgeous vegan food for a long time and she knows a lot. Her gorgeous new book called Vegan Chocolate is available in Whole Foods Market stores around the UK. Pop in and take a look.

Gelato

Gelato from Gelupo

I am so happy Gelupo has entered my life. This outlet on Archer Street has a separate list of vegan gelato flavours. During my visit I enjoyed the coconut, bitter chocolate and a refreshing gin, kiwi and elderflower concoction.

Gingerbread person

Gingerbread person

I already love most things made by Lazy Day Foods so I was certain the gingerbread person would make me smile as well. It was nice but a little too crunchy for my liking. I prefer my gingerbread to be chewy. Handy if you are looking for a gluten free treat.

Deli snacks

Deli snacks

Menoo Eclectic Foods is a compact deli on Kensington Church Street. The food outlet is bursting with all sorts of dishes and some of them happen to be vegan. Pictured are my two recent purchases of mushroom rolls and potato with dill rolls. The store has a sign in the window proudly proclaiming their pastry to be vegan and you just need to ask a server to point out the animal-free offerings of the day.

Kale sandwich

Kale sandwich

Pret a Manger have done it again. Their new sandwich is vegan and delicious. Hail the Kale is packed with goodness and it is fab to see them advertising the benefits of kale as a meat alternative. Remember to buy your sandwich to go as it works out cheaper.

Raw chocolate

Raw chocolate

This Lovechock bar caught my eye in Planet Organic. It is raw and packed with pineapple. It was a bit expensive so it might be a while before I try some of the other flavours, although they did look wonderful.

Dos amigos

Dos amigos

Here I am with my friend Julio from Mexico City. We were very drunk. Julio is going to be supervising the cooking for my vegan Day of the Dead supper club on Saturday November 2nd. At the time of writing, there were only five tickets remaining. Check out the huge goodie bag every attendee gets to take home. Be quick to grab one of the final spots! Click here.

One Earth

One Earth

Has anyone been to this shop in Birmingham? I haven’t made it yet but wanted to share in case some readers live nearby. Please let me know what it is like if you shop there!

Vegan pesto

Vegan pesto

I picked up these lovely vegan pestos in Salvino Italian deli on Brecknock Road, Kentish Town. They were even labelled vegan. The raw basil pesto was mouthwatering. Come along to the Brecknock Road Vegan Festival (see below) to buy your own!

Vegan chocolate

Vegan chocolate

Have you tried these cute vegan chocolates made by Zero Zebra? I can’t get enough of them even if they are expensive and hard to find. They are made with rice milk and are so smooth and creamy.

Vegan Bakery

Vegan Bakery

At first sight, these didn’t look all that appealing to me but believe me when I say they were divine. The ring on the right was filled with some sort of awesome strawberry filling. Both were purchased in Vx in King’s Cross.

Vegan chicken

Vegan chicken

I recently ate food from the Veggie Lounge in Wolverhampton. The nicest thing I can say about it is I guess it is good to see vegan options in the Midlands. Pictures is the vegan chicken and cheese fries. Not so great.

Scary cakes

Scary cakes

If you read this and then run out the door in the direction of Brixton, you might just be able to buy some of the Ms. Cupcake spooky cakes and treats for Halloween. Worms! Tombstones! Bloody fingers!

Brecknock Road Vegan Festival

Brecknock Road Vegan Festival

Don’t forget to drop on by the Brecknock Road Vegan Festival on November 9, 2013 from 10am. Vegan shoe launch, The Vegan Society filming, live music and an after party in the local pub. All the details here.

Last but not least, you can buy a ticket for A Very Vegan Christmas. I am running this supper club in conjunction with The Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green. See all the details here.

And that is your lot, as they say.

  1. Lots of tasty treats to try out here – thanks. Shame about your experience at the Veggie Lounge – we went last year when in the area & had two fab pizzas from them (one we scoffed in there & the other cold for a picnic lunch the next day, both delicious).

  2. Loving Hut in Camden is still open, they will cook your vegan fish in batter as well if you prefer it to breadcrumbs.

  3. That Pret sandwich excites me! so does the launch of Wills shoes! Vx

  4. The One Earth Shop in Birmingham is actually looking for new owners (and may be in danger of closing if they’re not found) – it could be an excellent vegan business opportunity! Details here: http://www.birminghamfoe.org.uk/the-warehouse/a-vegan-retail-opportunity-at-the-warehouse-birmingham
